Fundraising Tips
Whether you are in the early planning stages or getting near to the day itself, were here to answer your fundraising queries and give you any advice you need. These fundraising tips are for anyone thinking of organising a fundraising event. This page does not provide an exhaustive list of tips, nor is it a substitute for proper legal advice. Our fundraising tips provide a minimum checklist of points you need to consider but particular events may involve other important issues that you will need to take into consideration.
Were here to help
The Save Canterbury Cathedral Fundraising Team is here to help. Whether you're in the early stages of planning your event or need some advice along the way, were here to give you any advice you need.
You can get in touch with the fundraising team by calling 01227 865344 and we will do all we can to support everyone who is fundraising on our behalf. Please note we are a very busy but small team and because of this we may not always be able to provide the level of service some event organisers expect, but we will do our utmost to help and if we cant we will try to point you in the right direction of people that can. You will need to get an authority to fundraise from us in advance so please do get in touch.
General advice
Keep it legal!
Here are some legal points that may apply to the activity you are planning:
- If your fundraising involves collecting money or selling goods in a public place then you need to obtain permission and a licence from the local authority.
- Where events take place on private property you must obtain permission from the owner or manager.
- Please do not collect money door-to-door, as this is illegal without a licence.
- Small raffles held over one day are fine as long as they do not contain cash or alcoholic prizes and are part of a larger event. Other raffles may require a license from your local council so you must check with us before holding these.
- If you are planning to raise £5,000 or more, you must tell us in advance about how you plan to raise it.
- Any fundraising materials you use should say In aid of Save
Canterbury Cathedral Appeal, Registered Charity No. 1112590 and
Private Limited Company number 5588837
Safety first
It is important to make sure that everyone will be safe while they
are having fun.
Here is how:
- You must comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and all other relevant subordinate legislation. Make sure that no-one is fundraising, working or spectating in an unsafe environment. If you need information on Health and Safety, visit the following website: www.hse.gov.uk
- The Save Canterbury Cathedral Appeal cannot accept responsibility for accidents, so make sure that your event is safe for all concerned.
- If you are going to be carrying money around take care with personal security. Always use a safe route and always be accompanied and/or carry a personal alarm.
After the event
- Please make sure the money you raise reaches the Save Canterbury Cathedral Appeal safely and as quickly as possible.
- Always make sure money is counted by two people
- Make cheques payable to Save Canterbury Cathedral and send them to the address on our contact page together with a brief description of where and how the money was raised.
- Don't forget to include your name, address and postcode with your donation so that we can say 'thank you'!
- If possible, please send us photos (preferably digital) and any unusual or funny stories about the event. You could end up as headline news in your local paper!
Publicity
We recommend that fundraisers contact their local radio/TV stations and newspapers. The Save Canterbury Cathedral Appeal sends out information to the media on a regular basis and we find they are much more receptive to individual groups with regard to promoting or attending you event. We can of course promote you event in our newsletter and/or our online events diary.
Ticket Sales
Although the Fundraising Team will do their utmost to promote your event via our newsletter and website we are unable to sell tickets, whether these be event or raffle tickets.
Prizes
The Fundraising Team will provide you with official documentation that you can use to approach local businesses to donate raffle prizes. However we are unable to source raffle prizes for individual events as we must maintain a neutral relationship with local businesses and suppliers. This also applies to auction lots.
