Celebrating Volunteers
Volunteers at Canterbury Cathedral are vital to its running today and raising funds to secure its future. Just under 600 volunteers currently donate their time and the Cathedral simply couldn't operate without them. The tasks they undertake include the highly specialised roles of Cathedral Guide, Welcomers, and running the Treasury. Alongside that the Stewards, Flower Guild, Bell Ringers, Holy Dusters and Holy Stitchers are also volunteers too. (As the names suggest the Holy Dusters do indeed dust the Cathedral interior and the stitchers amongst among other things maintain the beautiful vestments worn by the clergy.)
Currently only 5 full time members of staff are employed in the Appeal office to raise the £50 million needed to raise funds for the urgent and costly conservation work needed. Continuing the appeal would not be possible without the invaluable help provided by our volunteers.
2008 Service of Celebration
Over 250 volunteers at Canterbury Cathedral attended a special private service of thanks in the Nave of the Cathedral on 3 June. The service was arranged to coincide with Volunteers Week which runs from 1-7 June - the UKs annual celebration of the work volunteers do and the contributions they make. The service was taken by The Very Reverend Robert Willis, Dean of Canterbury Cathedral.
2007 Volunteer Christmas Lunch

After an incredibly busy first year the Appeal office paid a special thank you to their volunteers by organising a Christmas lunch. The volunteers were invited to the home of Canon Dr Edward Condry and his wife Sarah, who also cooked the delicious lunch. On the menu were home made soups, bread and cheeses and a mouth-watering apple crumble and custard.
