Meet A Volunteer
My name is Tom, I'm 25 and I have recently been working as a
volunteer for the Save Canterbury Cathedral Appeal.
Being faced with a few spare months before beginning my career, I
was looking around for a useful way to occupy the time when I heard
about the Appeal. I had seen the press coverage on the launch of
the Appeal and was surprised by the amount of work that needs to be
done to save this historic building. Having grown up around
Canterbury and passed the Cathedral every day on my way into
school, I have strong memories of being in the presence of this
impressive structure. For me the Cathedral means many different
things. It is a place of worship and reflection, it is a
fascinating source of our history, and it is an architectural feat.
It represents to me a sense of continuity in a changing world and a
symbol of the possibilities of human achievement.
Like many who care about the Cathedral, I wanted to know why the
funding was not available to complete the essential restoration
work. However, with huge daily running costs and no major sources
of funding, the necessity of launching a large scale Appeal became
obvious. I decided that the best way I could contribute to saving
this building which means so much to me was to donate my time. I
volunteered for two days a week from April through to September. I
helped out on a variety of projects from showing people around the
roof spaces of the Cathedral to highlight the work that needs to be
done, to placing collection boxes in local shops and
businesses.
The work was often extremely interesting and provided unique
insights into the running of the Cathedral and also its history. It
was very satisfying to be able to contribute to saving this
important building in such a direct way.
